A good sofa lasts for a few years; especially if it is cleaned well on a periodical basis. However it is not advisable to just clean a sofa. You have to follow manufacturers' instructions to ensure you don't spoil the sofa while cleaning it.
Though leather sofas are durable, you have to clean them regularly using a damp cloth. It is okay to use specialist leather cleaning products for cleaning purposes.
Don't Rub In Stains
However, use only specialist leather occasionally and never should you use other cleaning products constituting of detergents and chemicals. Even cleaning products with alcohol should not be used for cleaning the sofa as it will only damage the leather.
If there are spills on the leather sofa, try removing them immediately using a damp cloth to prevent further staining. However avoid spot cleaning; instead, remove excessive debris and clean the sofa using big sweeps to avoid ugly looking spots. If you find this to be of no use, don't rub the stain in; call a professional to do the cleaning.
Baby Wipes Are Not As Mild As You Think
Though baby wipes can clean whatever falls on the leather sofa, avoid using them as they simultaneously remove the lustre, colour and finish of the sofa. Similarly, though cleaning leather sofas using dish soap is fast and easy, it will dull the sofa's finish.
In case of fabric sofas, it has to be cleaned regularly using the upholstery attachment of the vacuum cleaner. However, the sofa should never be cleaned using a brush as this can damage the fabrics.
Avoid Placing Your Sofa In Direct Sunlight
When you buy fabric sofas, it is better to buy one with removable cushions and seats with washable covers, for easy sofa cleaning. However when you wash these washable covers, make sure you wash them together to make sure one does not fade more than the others.
Whether you own a leather or fabric sofa, make sure you place it in a place away from direct heat or air conditioning. Also avoid direct sunlight to avoid fading. If you have a sunny room, choose sofas that are suitable for use in sunny areas.
