Published on Sunday, 18 April 2010

Did you know that roof stains can actually be associated with climate change? A lot of people put the blame to trees or birds, which in reality have very little to do with roof stains that make roofs dull and lifeless. The truth is, these black streaks are due to clusters of algae or moss that breed on your roof.
Not only is it unsightly, but it can also cause permanent damage to your roof so treatment should be implemented. The good news is that professional help is available. But if you will do the cleaning yourself, below are tips that you can use to clean these roof stains:
Use chlorine bleach solution but make sure to use protection for your skin and wear a mask to avoid inhaling the substance.Start cleaning from the topmost portion going downward. This goes the same with the water and solutions that you will use, it should be sprayed downwards to avoid additional problem such as leaks to your ceiling.Use a simple water hose instead of one with high pressure as it can damage the shingles permanently.Roof cleaning is a very ‘slippery' job - so in order to avoid accidents, you can use a chicken ladder along with a harness. It is also important that you walk lightly to avoid further damage on your roof.
After removing the stains, your roof will go back to its original beauty. Just remember to make regular inspections to maintain the look, safety and structural integrity of your roof.
