The 5 S of Keeping a Quality Workplace
Published on Friday, 12 February 2010

The Japanese utilize 5S in keeping a healthy and quality workplace. They believe that an organized workplace helps improve the quality of output by sorting, setting in order, sweeping, standardizing, and sustaining.

Sorting- The first S refers going through everything in the workplace. This means keeping the necessary things and files and discarding those that are not needed. This task reduces the time looking for particular items and so more time is devoted to work.Setting in order- The second S refers to designating a place for everything. After the day's work, everything should be returned to their proper places in order to prepare things needed for the next day.Sweeping- The third S refers to cleaning up the working area after the day. This is also a form of courtesy since you entered a clean place, you also leave the place clean. This will also ensure that you know where everything is placed when you get back to work the next day.Standardizing- The company imposes a set of standard on the proper etiquette and behavior particularly on cleanliness. Be acquainted with this set of rules.Sustaining- The fifth S refers to keeping up the 4S mentioned not only when the boss is around but as part of everyday routine.

The 5S Methodology is a simple system that when imposed well has a great impact with the quality of work.
