Some Basic Home Repairs You Can Do by Yourself
Published on Thursday, 15 April 2010
A lot of people make the (mistaken) assumption that home repairs are difficult to do. While there are indeed some repairs that need the expertise of a professional - thus requiring you to hire somebody for the job, there are certain basic repairs that you can do by yourself - or DIY (do it yourself) as they say. Clogged drains are one of the home repairs you can do by yourself. Sometimes pouring some boiling water down the drain can do the trick, but for tougher problems, you can buy declogging solutions from your neighborhood hardware store. Shower heads, on the other hand, can be declogged with a toothpick and some vinegar - just unscrew the head and then pour some vinegar on it to loosen the dirt, and then poke the holes with the toothpick. Rinse afterward and screw it back on. Even pipes can be replaced easily - just turn of the water valve to cut off the flow and then dismantle the pipes with the use of a monkey wrench. If you are not sure of the size, bring the pipe itself to the hardware store, and the sales people there will be happy to help you find the matching items. Don't forget to buy some Teflon tape to put around the threads of the pipes you're connecting - just a few wraps will do.
