Mattress Care
Published on Wednesday, 30 September 2009

When one buys a mattress, it isn't one of those purchases that you can discard after a few days, weeks, or months - a mattress is supposed to last for years to come. Of course, if follows that through constant use, as we do spend a significant number of hours sleeping on it, your mattress will naturally become smellier as time passes. A smelly mattress can be a breeding ground for all sorts on unpleasant things, so it is definitely important to keep you mattress as clean as possible at all times.   One thing you can do is vacuum all sides of the mattress with the non-brush attachment of your vacuum. Do this every 2 months or so. It is also recommended to put a cover sheet on the mattress before putting the main sheets. This way, the mattress underneath is less exposed while you can easily wash the inner sheet every month or so. An even better inner sheet to put would be dryer sheets. In the case of urination, use an enzymatic cleaner, which is readily available at grocery or hardware shops. You can also use baking soda to get rid of the smell.   When your mattress gets moldy this is the time to change it. If it's less than about 50% or so, then you can air out your mattress in the sun (make sure it doesn't get wet) and vacuum the whole thing afterward. But if you've been using the mattress for a couple of years, then purchasing a new one is in order.
