Linen Washing Must-Do's
Published on Thursday, 04 February 2010
Linens are indeed one of the most sensitive kinds of fabric. Therefore, they must be given extra care, especially when washed. They must not be washed in the same level as that of the other sheets. Rather, you must carefully follow these steps:
· Make a thorough assessment of the linen you will be washing. If there are holes in it, make sure to mend them before you wash them. This is because if you wash them first, chances are small holes will grow bigger.
· If you are washing small pieces of linen, it is advisable to wash them by hand. Otherwise, washing machine is recommended. Don't use metal containers as well because some metals tend to react with soaps that can just leave other stains to the linen.
· Settle for a mild soap only. However, if there are serious stains in the linen, it is good to use sodium perborate.
· Rinse the fabric thoroughly as most soap residues can only cause yellowing to the linen. Also, do not wring the fiber during the final rinse. This process can only weaken the fiber. Instead, take off the excess water from the linen by rolling it into a towel.
It is always necessary to observe these rules when cleaning linen. However, if the piece of fabric has a historical value, better yet consult a professional conservator to do the job for you.
