Published on Tuesday, 26 January 2010 A dirty fireplace with accumulated soot and creosote is a fire hazard. There are so many cases of chimney fires caused by dirty fireplace. To keep your house safer and to make it more presentable, you need to regularly clean your fireplace. So here is an easy step by step guide that you can follow: First, you have to remove large debris from the fireplace and place them in a trash bag. You will be able to clean the soot easily if you remove big obstructions. Then you have to protect the immediate area surrounding the fireplace. Place a tarp on top of the carpeting and protect it with old newspapers. Once you have done this, you are now ready to remove the soot. Use commercial-grade vacuum cleaner for removing the soot. After vacuuming the soot, you can now clean the interior of the fireplace with brush, warm soapy water, and bleach. Rinse then wipe dry the interior with old rags. You can now scrub the floor of the fireplace with soap and water and dry it immediately. Then bring the fireplace grate outside to clean it thoroughly. If your fireplace has a glass cover, you can clean it with old newspaper.
