Cleaning Basics for Basement
Published on Sunday, 03 January 2010
Is your basement already overflowing with different kind of things you just store and never again bothered to arrange and just leave it to pile up so high? If yes, it's time for you to start thinking of cleaning your basement.
Cleaning your basement may be an overwhelming task at first but just think of how good it will look after you finished cleaning and arranging it. Motivate yourself by imagining how you will feel if you accomplished this task.
Inventory
Make an inventory on what is in your basement. Are there things that you might want to give, donate or sell? You may put aside for the meantime your sentimental side. Be practical in sorting out the things that need to go to the trash and be out of the basement because it's no use to you anymore.
Start with the furniture, can you still re-use that furniture? If you can still use it, have it cleaned, repaint or upholstered. For the toys, you might consider having a garage sale or donating it to orphanage and the likes. Same with old clothes, you can use that as a rag or donate it.
Clean
You may remove all the things in the basement and start cleaning but if it's not possible because of having heavy things and no one will be able to help you, start from one corner at the far side of the room and from ceiling to the floor.
Wash
You can use soap and water in washing your basement. Use brush in scrubbing the walls and the corners of the basement room
Mop/Dust/Vacuum
Dust first the floor to get rid of accumulated dusts and dirt. You can use brooms and long brooms for the ceiling. Mop the floor by using the soap and water or some cleaning products you usually uses. But make sure that what you're using is appropriate for the kind of floor you have (like tiles, wood, floor mats). To ensure a clean floor and corners, use vacuum.
Wipe/ Polish
If your basement has shelves/drawers you can clean it by wiping the surface with some disinfectant. Polishing those shelves may give a certain shine to your basement. You can also use wax or any products in your floor that will make it shine. Shiny and polished surfaces may prevent dust from accumulating.
Organise
In organising your basement, start with the large objects. Put it in a place where it might not get in the way. If your basement is usually flooded during the rainy season, it's better if you have a platform where you put all your things. Have also a water-proof container. Small things should be put in a box or on the shelf.
After you finished doing this, you will have a basement that is airy, organised and not suffocating.
