Published on Monday, 20 July 2009
Rugs can be difficult to maintain. If stains and spills are a regular problem with your rugs, these tips will help you maintain clean and fresh rugs. Rubbing Many people make the mistake of rubbing on the rug too hard or in a careless manner. If there is a stain on the rug surface, make sure you rub it in a gentle and appropriate manner otherwise the stain can spread in other areas of your rug. Attending to stains As soon as there is a stain on the rug, ensure that you attend to it immediately. Most people attend to stains after many days, by which time the stain would have set deep inside the rug crevices. Never allow the rug stains to settle in for too long as that can make removal more difficult. Make sure you use the right cleaning products to remove the stains. If the stain has just occurred, then use an absorbent cloth and leave it overnight on the stain to enable it to be absorbed. Chemical testing It is also important that before you apply any chemical on your rugs, that you test a small part of it first. If your carpet is expensive or contains delicate materials, these chemicals could easily damage the carpet. Hence, ensure that you test the chemical before usage. Mildew removal Mildew and mould can be extremely difficult to remove from carpet surfaces. Since these have grown over a period, their removal will also take quite a bit of time so be patient. If you have a coloured rug, you can use lemon juice to remove them. You could even use salt solution or bleach devoid of chlorine. If you have tested a small portion of hydrogen chloride and you find these do not cause damage to the carpet, you can use it to remove mould and mildew. Water Water usually tends to work well in removing stains immediately. If your rug has a stain on it, try using water to eliminate or dissolve the stain.
